Apparently, smaller is better these days. Some may be shocked to learn that BMW is downsizing its 5 Series engine, replacing the previous-gen naturally aspirated 3.0L 6-cylinder with their brand new 2.0L 4-cylinder turbocharged number.

Now, don't all panic at once. This drop in cylinders doesn't mean a drop in power. The 5 Series will return the same 240 horses with the new smaller engine. Let's all take a deep, collective breath over that tidbit of info.
The new engine will appear in the 2012 528i and will be coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission as well as a new powertrain that BMW claims will give up to 15% better fuel efficiency over the previous 5 Series models. The 528i, which will go on sale this fall, will also offer a new all-wheel drive option.
