Refreshing or Revolting: 2013 Audi A4

Audi’s refreshed 2013 A4 announcement comes just two weeks after the redesigned 2012 BMW 3 Series rolled into Refreshing/Revolting. That’s fitting, considering that the two cars will soon be competing for the same customers. In the U.S., the A4 sedan and wagon remain Audi’s best-selling line, above the Q5 compact crossover and way beyond the A4-sized coupe and convertible, the A5. From a styling standpoint, does BMW have anything to fear with the 2013 Audi A4′s visual adjustments?

Like the 2013 Audi A5, the new A4 sports completely redone headlights that have a fiercer look not to mention fancy LED accents. The front grille is as bold as ever, though now integrating the more refined shape also seen on the Audi A6. The black panels surrounding the foglights now point toward the grille, like the headlights.

From the side, we’re seeing virtually no changes besides a new selection of wheel designs. The arched side window design remains on the 2013 Audi A4 and probably will until the nameplate is retired. In back, the taillights appear to use the same space as before, but with new details like LED light pipes.

Inside, a new steering wheel and additional infotainment controls around the gear selector are the main changes. Who are we kidding here, though? The 2013 Audi A4′s most noticeable change compared to the 2012 model are those more aggressive headlights, grille, and lower fascia. Do you think it’s a better look than the outgoing car? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

Last week, we introduced Styling Size-Up — Refreshing/Revolting’s companion blog series — with the 2012 Buick Verano.

Except for the chrome trim on the rear of the Verano, mt was a fan of the new Buick: “Overall, I really, really like the vehicle’s design and style. While I think the TSX is the best looking Acura today, it’s in a different league. The TSX is more aggressive, sporty looking, while the Verano is more clasically styled.”
