By now the next-generation BMW M6 is looking awfully familiar — we previously spied the M6 coupe and, later, an M6 convertible. We still don’t know anything official about the forthcoming BMW M6, but given that our colleagues at Motor Trend have spied yet another prototype car, it’s clear that the new M6 is under development.
Unfortunately, the example spied here doesn’t look significantly different than a regular BMW 650i convertible. The big, black wheels and large cross-drilled brake discs, however, resemble those seen on the 2012 BMW M5, betraying the family ties between the two cars.
It’s strongly expected that the new M6 will use the same drivetrain as the new M5. That means a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 producing 560 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque, with power routed through a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission to the rear wheels. As with the M5 and 650i convertible, it’s likely that the American-market BMW M6 will also be blessed with a traditional six-speed manual transmission.
The 2012 BMW M5 doesn’t go on sale until spring 2012, so we don’t expect to hear anything official about its any earlier than the Detroit auto show next January. For now, tide yourself over by checking out the full batch of spy photos at Motor Trend.
