BMW Recalls 2011 BMW X3 SUVs for Possible Loss of Power Steering

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration announced today that BMW is recalling a small number of 2011 BMW X3 SUVs for an issue related to its power steering system. This issue is not similar to last week’s recall of BMW X5s due to possible cracks in the welds of its belt tensioner.

The Problem: According to the NHTSA, the affected X3s have a faulty control module in the Electric Power Steering (EPS) unit. Consequently, the unit’s failure will cause a loss in power steering assistance, which increases the driver’s risk of a crash.

The Fix: BMW will fix the faulty module free of charge. The automaker will notify owners shortly. Owners may also contact BMW customer relations at 1-800-525-7417.

Number of Vehicles Potentially Affected: The NHTSA states that 50 vehicles are affected. Specifically, only BMW X3s built from April 27, 2011 to June 8, 2011 are included in the recall.
