New Audi A6 hybrid due out in 2012

Audi has confirmed that a new A6 hybrid model will go into production in 2012, as the car maker looks to extend its use of hybrid powertrain technology.

The new A6 hybrid will use a 2.0 litre TFSI petrol and a electric motor to power it and is expected to emit 146g/km CO2 according to WhatCar.com. That’s more than the current generation 2.0 TDi achieves when fitted to the A6 saloon, with just 132g/km CO2.

As such we might well expect the model to appeal to US customers more than to Europeans, although the German car maker has yet to announce whether the new model will appear in Stateside showrooms or not. Hybrid models in the US have historically proven popular as American customers still show a preference to gasoline cars over diesel models.

Using the same technology as used in the Q5 hybrid, the new A6 hybrid is also expected to 44.1 mpg and hit 60mph in 7.3 seconds when it goes on sale in the middle of next year.

What Car estimates that the model will retail for around £38,000 when it arrives.
