Mercedes showcases new electric van

The Post Expo trade fair in Stuttgart was the setting for Mercedes-Benz to showcase its new Vito E-CELL electric van.

The Mercedes Vito E-CELL has a payload of 900kg and a load compartment with no restrictions on use. Its batteries are located in the under-floor unit, so as not to take up load space, and have a combined capacity of 36kWh – sufficient for range of around 81miles.

It will be a powerful vehicle too, with the electric motor that powers the Vito E-CELL having an output of 60kW and 280Nm of torque. It can reach a maximum speed of 50mph.

The vehicle began limited production last year with Mercedes-Benz now offering exclusive road tests to potential customers. Many of the vehicles have already reached customers however – around 100 had been delivered in Berlin and Stuttgart by the end of 2010, with plans in place for the staggered delivery of a further 2,000 units.
