For those unaware of BMW’s rumored nomenclature shuffle, you read that right. Following the recent debut of the upcoming 3 Series sedan (codename F30), BMW is now putting the coupe version through the requisite barrage of testing. But what will it be called?
Like we previously reported a few months ago, there’s a strong chance that the coupe will be dubbed the 4 Series – continuing BMW’s new plan to revamp its model lineup by assigning odd numbers to sedans and wagons and even numbers to the sportier variants. We already see it on the 6 Series coupe, which is largely based on the 5 Series.
At this stage there’s not much to report on the upcoming 3 Series-based coupe. Compared to the F30, the front will likely get a slightly reworked fascia featuring similar headlamp and grille work, but stretched out – same goes for the rear. Mechanically, the coupe should get the same powertrains as the sedan. That means the turbocharged, 240-hp four-cylinder will serve as the base engine, while the N55, 300-hp, turbocharged, inline-six carries over as an option. As for the M-powered variant? Info is still slim, but the rumor mill says it will also be a turbocharged six-cylinder.
