The AMG division’s naturally aspirated 6.2-liter V8 is a glorious method of propulsion. But its life has been cut short by regulations over emissions and fuel consumption. In its stead, however, is a new AMG V8, displacing only 5.5 liters but fitted with two turbos to make 550 hp and 590 lb-ft of torque. That’s a greater output than the 6.2 and also returns a 22 percent improvement in fuel consumption. This engine will debut in the ’12 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG, hitting showrooms toward the end of 2011.
The “basic” version sports 518 hp and 516 lb-ft, so it requires an optional performance package to get the biggest blast. But when someone is already shelling out the better part of $90,000 for an AMG-treated E-Class, why would they not go the whole hog? Anyway, the optimal speed stats run to 4.3 seconds for the zero-to-60 mph sprint and an electronically limited maximum of 186 mph. We’re also talking seven-speed gearbox, adjustable sports suspension and three-mode stability control.
