APT Technologies has launched a new fast-acting charging system designed to make recharging electric cars quicker and more convenient.
The new Evolt Ultra is a 50kW DC charging system that can recharge a car in just 15 minutes, overcoming one of the major obstacles to wider uptake.
The Evolt Ultra system, which looks a bit like a conventional petrol pump, meets CHAdeMo standards, meaning that it can be used by many mainstream electric cars such as the Nissan Leaf and Mitsubishi i-MiEV. The system houses a dual charger to enable two vehicles to be charged simultaneously. In addition, the power unit is separate from the charging point itself and so can be housed at another location, for improved security and safety for users.
Justin Meyer of APT Technologies says that the Evolt Ultra could prove instrumental in expanding the appeal of electric vehicles to a wider audience: “The Evolt Ultra is smaller, slicker and, most importantly, speedier than anything previously developed in the area of electric vehicle charging,” he says. “The speed of charge will render electric vehicles suitable for covering the distances of the vast majority of driving patterns in a way that they never have been previously.”
A further advantage of the system is that integrated communications, such as Ethernet and 3G, allow the Evolt Ultra to connect with remote control stations; operating the equipment remotely is simple to manage and makes it possible to monitor data from the device in real time. The Evolt Ultra is also designed for user safety and meets weather protection standards.
