Maserati has released video showing its new Grand Cherokee-based Kubang SUV in action, which was first shown to journalists at the 2011 Frankfurt show in advance of the live reveal. But is it the real thing? Or CGI?
The Kubang luxury SUV has raised eyebrows because of its shared platform with the Jeep Grand Cherokee, but mostly because the Italian SUV will not be assembled in Modena, but at Chrysler’s Jefferson North plant in Detroit, Michigan. While many are critiquing the idea and saying the Kubang will be just another rebadged Chrysler, Maserati emphasizes the history and meticulous work that goes behind every vehicle wearing the Trident label in the video below.
Although built in America, the new SUV will have Modena-engineered performance brakes, suspension and steering. Paolo Martinelli, the Maserati Powertrain Department Head with over 30 years of experience at both Ferrari and its Formula 1 team, is also designing a new generation of Maserati engines that will be under the Kubang’s hood.
Check out the video below and see if you think the Kubang has really has come to life, or if it’s just a slickly-produced CGI tease.
