It’s been over a year since we last caught Mercedes-Benz testing the next-generation S-Class and not much has changed – meaning that this heavily-camouflaged tester leaves us very little to report looks-wise.
Earlier this year, our sister magazine Automobile provided a few details on what we can expect for the new S-Class, which has received the W222 internal code designation. There are plans to offer four body styles. The first two will be the standard four-door sedan and four-passenger coupe (CL replacement). Additionally, Mercedes will offer an extended-wheelbase sedan and a four-seat convertible.
Not surprisingly, the new S-Class will be a showcase of innovative technology. Most notable is the new Magic Body Control (MBC), which will improve body ride by scanning the road. MBC employs two road-scanning cameras and works in conjunction with Active Body Control (ABC) to compensate for road irregularities (up to 80 mph). Like the second-generation CLS, the W222 will feature full LED headlamps, but one-ups it’s smaller sibling with Magic Light Control (MLC), which adjusts lighting according to road conditions and steering angle. The interior is said to have an improved COMAND interface.
The current S-Class has one of the most varied engine choices in the Mercedes-Benz lineup and the next-gen model should be no different. That means we should see a number of V-8s, a hybrid, a diesel, and V-12s should carry over as well. Expected launch date should happen in 2013. That’s it for now, but we’ll be sure to provide updates as we get them.
