Do you like horsepower and speed? Got about a hundred large to drop on one of the most sought-after machines on this side of a half-million bucks? If so, Nissan has a car for you.
For the 2012 model year, the Japanese automaker is updating their potent GT-R to deliver even more of the world-class performance, styling and handling that made the original revamped model a hit since it launched a few years back.
Four years into its sales life in the North American market, designers and engineers have specified updated looks, new colours, new features, and of course, even more power. In addition to the standard GT-R, 2012 will see the availability of a new ‘Black Edition’ model which features unique seats, interior colours and wheels. Shoppers will also notice new cosmetic tweaks and integrated LED running lamps for increased visual character.
“The 2012 Nissan GT-R continues to be a multidimensional performance machine that lives up to the concept of ‘the ultimate supercar that can be driven by anyone, anytime, anywhere,’” said Al Castignetti, vice president and general manager, Nissan Division, Nissan North America, Inc. “With the enhancements for 2012, including its 530-horsepower twin turbo V6 and revised styling, the GT-R legend continues to grow. We can’t wait for its arrival in Nissan showrooms, and on the streets.”
Aimed at the $200,000 Porsche 911 Turbo S’s power output, the Nissan VR38DETT powerplant has been tweaked to deliver 530 horsepower, an improvement of 45 over the 2011 model. Torque has also been cranked to nearly 450 lb.-ft. Nissan says the improvements come from modifications to the turbocharger system, increased boost pressure, tweaked valve timing and some alterations to the intake and exhaust system to increase airflow.
Airflow over the GT-R’s body has been improved as well, resulting in a 10 percent improvement in downforce and reduction in the vehicle’s coefficient of drag. Modifications to the fascia even fit larger grille openings for increased air supply to the brakes and radiator. Where performance breathing is concerned, the GT-R is well covered.
Ditto traction and stability. With the goal of delivering easily-accessible, industry-leading performance, Nissan’s specially-tuned ATTESA E-TS All Wheel Drive system delivers maximum traction on any surface and in any weather. The GT-R also provides drivers several ways to customize the performance experience to their exact tastes and skill level. Suspension firmness, transmission shift characteristics and the stability control system are all adjustable in numerous stages.
Finally, the GT-R’s 20-inch RAYS wheels have been redesigned, reinforced and lightened to further the GT-R’s already staggering handling characteristics.
Of course, the GT-R’s handling and power don’t mean taking a hit in the safety or practicality departments, either. Despite its impressive performance specifications, the GT-R is a four-seat vehicle and one with a relatively generous trunk and a full suite of safety and driver-support systems. Dare we say, it’s an ideal track-bred, all-weather rocket sled for motorsports enthusiasts, young families, or anyone in between.
The 2012 Nissan GT-R is set to go on sale early this year at GT-R Certified Nissan dealerships across the continent.
