The first accessory to break cover is a new body kit. While Toyota’s TRD performance wing offers its own body kit abroad, Scion dealers will instead sell a four-piece body kit furnished by tuning firm Five Axis. The kit includes a new lower fascia, aggressive rocker sills that kink upwards into the rear fenders’ character lines, and a new rear diffuser that’s arguably more attractive than TRD’s effort.
Buyers will apparently have the choice of ordering the kit in a pre-painted form, and can also spring for a rear spoiler (pictured). Pricing has not been announced, but whispers suggest the kit could sticker for around $1900 for a painted four-piece kit. A one-year warranty is included.
TRD’s efforts for the 2013 FR-S will focus mainly on performance hardware. From what we’ve heard from sources close to the matter, many – though not all – of the options offered abroad for the GT-86 will be available here. We’re told TRD’s U.S. catalog will include a cold-air intake, short shifter, 18-inch aluminum wheels, a performance front brake kit, a revised exhaust system, lowering springs, sway bars, and a strut tower brace. Sadly, it appears the adjustable damper kit offered overseas isn’t likely to cross the pond.
As is the case with the Five Axis kit, expect the TRD add-ons to be sold through Scion’s dealer network, but don’t expect the TRD parts to arrive until the fourth quarter of 2012. Accessories available at launch will primarily be relegated to mild cosmetic (i.e. a rear bumper appliqué) and audio enhancements.
Scion hasn’t locked down an exact time frame for when the 2013 FR-S will arrive at dealers, instead opting to suggest cars should appear on lots in late spring. MSRP for a FR-S with a six-speed manual transmission is $24,930 (destination included), while cars equipped with an automatic will start at $26,030.
